Spiritual Disciplines 7
We’re fellow travelers on this path. The way isn’t easy. In fact, embarking on this journey is to turn your back on the way the world is heading and walk against the tide of culture. Jesus never said it would be easy. Anyone who tells you the path of Jesus is easy is selling something.
Some may not want to start.
Statistically, some won’t make it.
But the promise of Jesus is that if we do what he commands, if we stay on his path, he will never leave us or abandon us.
This week we tackle the spiritual discipline of Fasting. What is a spiritual fast? What it is not. What are some practical ways we can implement this practice?
The purpose of a fast is to let go of an appetite in order to seek God on matters of deep concern for others, myself and the world. In other words, it’s to make space for more of God in our lives. To fast is to say “no” to certain things, food, drink, substances or activities for a season in order to expose our self-centeredness, our addictions, our compulsions and cravings. Then, to offer ourselves to Jesus by giving him our time and denial-of-self in order to follow in his footsteps.
